By using some apples, creating this gluten-free apple crisp recipe is easy to make. Best of all, it is also dairy-free and nut-free.
I usually have plenty of apples at home. Since I don’t want to let apples go to waste, I thought about making this dish. These days we must stretch out our food shelf life due to the limited amount of times we go to the grocery store.
Most importantly, apples have many health benefits. I mean, come on, we have all heard that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. So, why not incorporate this fruit into a delicious dessert?
Additionally, I wanted to make an easy dessert that is gluten-free, dairy-free, and nut-free for the family. Using apples would add the additional benefits of this recipe.
Health Benefits of Apples
Apples have many varieties and contain a generous amount of phytochemicals, which are active compounds found in plants. One essential phytochemical apples contain quercetin. This flavonoid is a compound that has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Additionally, some health benefits of apples include:
- High source of fiber with the skin included may help with weight loss
- Helps lower cardiovascular risk and cholesterol levels (1)
- Helps lower blood pressure (2)
- May help control type 2 diabetes (3)
- Contains antioxidants which help prevent breast, lung, and digestive cancers (4)
Ingredients for Gluten-Free Apple Crisp
Making this gluten-free apple crisp at home is easy. Please note that you can substitute some of the following ingredients due to diet restrictions:
- 6 Apples (any type)
- Fresh organic lemon
- Maple syrup, brown sugar or agave
- Gluten-free flour or any type of flour
- Gluten-free rolled oats
- Sea salt or iodized salt
- Vegan butter, regular butter, or margarine
- Cinnamon (optional)
To make this dish you need about a 2 quart baking pan such as a 10 x 10 inch or 13 x 9 inch baking dish. Additionally you will need an apple corer and peeler. An apple corer and peeler are optional as a knife may be used. It is just easier and less time consuming using these additional tools.
Making Gluten-free Apple Crisp
The beauty of making this dish is that the ingredients can be substituted according to your dietary restrictions. I tend to make recipes with organic and plant-based ingredients as much as possible. Most importantly, I have to create nut-free and gluten-free dishes as much as possible.
First, I gather some Fuji apples and wash them thoroughly. I peel them using a peeler and core them using this gadget. I cut thin wedges and place in a bowl.
After placing in bowl, squeeze about 1 tablespoon of lemon juice onto the apples. This is about half a lemon. Add the maple syrup, brown sugar, or agave. Toss well onto the apples.
Next, add the 2 tablespoons of gluten-free flour, or the flour of your choice. The beauty of this recipe is that the ingredients can be substituted. I like using unbleached gluten-free flour by Bob’s Red Mill.
Gently toss the ingredients until the apples are well covered. Spread evenly into the baking pan and set aside.
Apple Crisp Topping
Butter is one of the main ingredients to the apple crisp topping. The type of butter used can be determined by your diet restrictions. If you have a nut allergy, some plant-based butters such as Miyoko’s have nut-free butters as well. One of the butters that is pictured above had cashews. If you have a nut allergy, be mindful of purchasing the oat milk, cashew-free butter.
To make the apple crisp topping, soften about 12 tablespoons (1.5 sticks) of butter. Add the remainder of the maple syrup, brown sugar, or agave. Mix until smooth.
Secondly, add the salt and cinnamon (optional) into the butter mixture. Once that is mixed, fold in the gluten-free flour and oats until it is well coated.
Lastly, sprinkle the mixture on top of the apples. As the heat melts the butter mixture, it will spread on its own.
Bake at 350 degrees F for about 40 minutes or until the buttery topping turns golden brown. Cool and serve in a cup or dish. Add vanilla ice cream or top with whip cream.
